In a recent incident that has captured the attention of Nigerians, a video has surfaced on the internet showing the daring escape of a Nigerian national named Julius Anthony Onyekachukwu from police custody during a drug raid in Navi Mumbai, India.

The incident occurred as part of a major crackdown against drug-related activities in Navi Mumbai. On October 6, 2023, the Navi Mumbai Police arrested the 44-year-old Nigerian from the Sector 24 area of Ulwe and seized drugs with an estimated value of 84.8 lakh rupees. Alongside the drugs, the police also confiscated mobile phones, digital weighing tools, and other materials believed to be used in the illicit drug trade.

This operation marked the second significant crackdown on drug-related activities within a span of six weeks by the Navi Mumbai Police.

The arrest of Julius Anthony Onyekachukwu came following information received by the police regarding drug sales in the Ulwe node. Consequently, the NRI police conducted raids at 12 locations in sectors 3, 5, 18, 24, and 25 within the Ulwe node, leading to the arrest of the Nigerian suspect.

The police found and seized 706 grams of mephedrone drugs valued at 70.6 lakhs and 95 grams of Cocaine worth 14.25 lakhs from Onyekachukwu during the operation.

Furthermore, during the raids, it was discovered that 14 foreign nationals had been residing in India illegally. These individuals, comprising seven females and seven males, all hailing from Nigeria and Uganda, were issued notices to leave India under the Passport Act.

In the viral video that circulated on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the accused Nigerian was initially seen being held by a policeman. However, as they moved towards a police van, the accused managed to break free from the officer’s grip and made a desperate attempt to escape.

The video captured the intense chase that ensued, with police officers pursuing the fleeing suspect in different directions. Although there have been no official reports confirming whether the police successfully apprehended the escaped individual, the incident has sparked widespread reactions among Nigerians on social media and beyond.
