The Nigerian Army has announced plans to launch three training exercises across the country to combat rising criminality during the upcoming Yuletide season, particularly in the South-East, South-South, South-West, and North-Central regions.
Brig-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, revealed on Friday that these exercises, named ‘GOLDEN DAWN III’ in the South-East, ‘ENDURING PEACE III’ in the North-Central, and ‘STILL WATERS III’ in the South-South and South-West, will be formally inaugurated by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, at a later date.
The exercises are designed to enhance both individual and collective professional competence and will be integrated into real-time operations to address specific security challenges in the affected geographical zones.
Exercise GOLDEN DAWN III, situated in the South-East, will focus on combating security challenges such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, communal conflicts, and other crimes that tend to increase during the Yuletide season.
Exercise ENDURING PEACE III, taking place in the North-Central, will address issues such as farmer-herder conflicts, cattle rustling, banditry, kidnapping, ethno-religious conflicts, and terrorism. It will equip troops with skills to combat banditry and conduct operations like hostage rescue, intelligence-driven raids, and coordinated efforts with sister services and security agencies.
Additionally, Exercise STILL WATERS III, in the South-South and South-West, will target issues related to cultism, robbery, kidnapping, pipeline vandalism, economic sabotage, and critical infrastructure protection.
During these exercises, troops will receive training in advanced surveillance techniques, rapid response tactics, and the utilization of technology to counter pipeline vandalism and other economic sabotage activities.
The Nigerian Army will work collaboratively with various security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Customs Service, and others to ensure coordinated and effective responses to security threats. Joint training exercises and intelligence sharing will be integral components of the Army’s approach.
The Nigerian Army is determined to overcome emerging security challenges in troubled areas of the country through these upcoming training exercises, namely STILL WATERS III, GOLDEN DAWN III, and ENDURING PEACE III, with a focus on enhancing troop capabilities, improving synergy with sister services, and ensuring the safety and security of the populace.
