During the meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, several significant agreements and commitments were reached, including:
1. The Federal Government’s commitment to provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to alleviate public transportation challenges arising from the removal of petrol subsidies.
2. Provision of funds for micro and small-scale enterprises and waivers on VAT on diesel for the next six months.
3. Commencement of payment of N75,000 to 15 million households at N25,000 per month for a three-month period from October to December 2023.
Key agreements and resolutions from the meeting included:
– Stressing that outstanding issues can only be resolved when workers actively engage in their roles and not through strikes.
– Labor unions advocating for a higher wage award, with the Federal Government assuring that their request would be presented to President Bola Tinubu for further deliberation.
– Establishment of a sub-committee to work out the implementation details of government interventions aimed at mitigating the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
– Recognition of the ongoing issue between the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State, with Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, pledging to resolve the matter.
The NLC and TUC agreed to consider the offers made by the Federal Government, with a view to temporarily suspending the planned strike for further consultations regarding the implementation of the resolutions.
The meeting, chaired by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, included the participation of governors, key government officials, and labor union leaders.
Gbajabiamila expressed his gratitude to both government and labor representatives for their commitment to finding common ground, highlighting the agreements reached on various issues concerning Nigerian workers.
He clarified that all categories of workers, regardless of their income levels, would benefit from the wage bill, addressing concerns raised on social media.
NLC President Joe Ajaero echoed the sentiment that substantial progress had been made in the negotiations and emphasized the need for consultation with labor organizations to determine whether to call off the strike.
