Dele Momodu, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has taken issue with the comments made by former Senator Shehu Sani regarding the 2023 election. Sani had suggested on social media that the PDP’s decision to focus on President Bola Tinubu’s academic background at Chicago State University (CSU) would not be enough to unseat him from the presidency, emphasizing the importance of valid votes in determining election outcomes.

Sani argued that concerns about Tinubu’s moral credentials should have been addressed before the election, and he also noted that the PDP’s internal conflicts played a role in their defeat in the previous election.

In response, Dele Momodu disagreed with Shehu Sani’s assessment, asserting that the 2023 election bore similarities to the elections of 1979 and 1983, which were characterized by iconic candidates from various regions of Nigeria. He pointed out that just as Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe were prominent candidates in the earlier elections, Tinubu and Peter Obi represented the South West and South East regions in the 2023 election.

Momodu also drew parallels between Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, both from northern regions, and noted the presence of influential figures like Malam Aminu Kano in the past and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in the present.

He explained that for a candidate to win, they must secure support from at least four regions of the country. In the 2023 election, Peter Obi dominated the Southern hemisphere, while Tinubu struggled in the South West, and Atiku Abubakar secured votes in some Southern states. Momodu pointed out that the APC faced internal conflicts, with Tinubu openly opposing President Buhari and Governor Nasir el Rufai also contributing to the discord.

Momodu questioned Shehu Sani’s attempt to portray the PDP as the only party with internal issues when the APC had its own share of troubles. He attributed the negative perception of the PDP to the presence of Governor Nyesom Wike, who had substantial funds at his disposal for his political activities, including daily press conferences. Ultimately, Momodu suggested that APC resorted to self-help with last-minute support from President Buhari, culminating in a scenario where a sitting president openly displayed his ballot paper, sending subtle messages to powerful state agencies.
