Former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has called for an end to the usage of the phrase “May Nigeria not happen to me,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining hope among citizens.

During a special program on Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary aired on Channels Television’s “Empowering Tomorrow” on Monday, Fashola stated, “Expressions like ‘Nigeria should not happen to me’ or similar phrases should no longer find a place in our public discourse because they tarnish the image and pride of our nation.”

He continued by saying, “The image and pride of our nation are shaped by the collective efforts of its people. It’s not sufficient to only celebrate the achievements of Nigerians abroad; their ambassadorial role is vital, and I acknowledge that.”

Fashola stressed the need for Nigeria to focus on seemingly small but significant aspects and use them as sources of inspiration and hope. “Hope is the most valuable currency that sustains human civilization, fosters harmony, and instills the belief that success is achievable,” he remarked.

As a lawyer and former governor of Lagos, Fashola encouraged the administration led by Tinubu not to shy away from criticism, as constructive criticism is essential for the country’s improvement.

“In the spirit of criticism, we should refrain from using negative language to describe our country, even when addressing its shortcomings. I remember attending a conference where the theme was ‘Can we all agree never to highlight Nigeria’s negatives?’ I have adhered to that commitment to the best of my ability,” he concluded.

While an initial proposal of ₦166 billion was reviewed, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu confirmed that the council ultimately authorized ₦83.2 billion for these interventions. The fund is designed to bolster emergency preparedness, establish early warning systems, and implement mitigation strategies to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding, which frequently results in infrastructure damage, farmland destruction, and civilian displacement.

A Mandate for Results and Implementation

During the meeting, Vice President Shettima emphasized that the administration’s reform agenda must translate into tangible outcomes for all Nigerians. He stressed that the council’s success will be measured by its positive impact on vulnerable citizens, farmers, manufacturers, and the youth.

Key focus areas highlighted by the Vice President include:

  • Shift to Production: Nigeria is transitioning from a period of stabilization toward active production and coordinated national growth.

  • Social Protection: The government aims to build a robust system that ensures the most vulnerable citizens are not left behind during ongoing economic reforms.

  • Value Chain Development: Shettima asserted that the country must stop exporting raw materials and instead develop a comprehensive value chain connecting farms, factories, and global markets.

  • Export Optimization: The NEC is committed to addressing bottlenecks at Nigerian ports and ensuring local agricultural products meet international standards to better reward the labor of local producers.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to moving beyond isolated interventions, focusing instead on practical results that strengthen national development and provide a secure foundation for the country’s future.

Power Struggle Erupts: IPOB Leadership Dumps Nnamdi Kanu, Declares Office Of The Leader Vacant.

Published

on

In a significant leadership transition, the Directorate of State (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of Nnamdi Kanu from his position as leader, as well as the removal of the Director of Radio Biafra.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to an official statement released on Thursday by the Head of the DOS, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, the decision was finalized during a plenary meeting of the Directorate held on Wednesday. The DOS has now assumed full administrative control over the organization’s operations.

Rationale Behind the Suspension

The group emphasized that IPOB was established by a collective of Biafrans in the Diaspora, rather than any single individual, and asserted that no one holds the authority to dismantle the DOS, which remains the group’s highest decision-making body.

The leadership cited critical intelligence regarding communications allegedly originating from Kanu while in Sokoto prison as the primary catalyst for the suspension. The DOS noted that:

  • Security Risks: Certain “unguarded communications” from the prison have reportedly led to unnecessary arrests, torture, and the loss of life among IPOB members in the region.

  • Surveillance: The group claimed that Kanu’s current interactions and visitors are being closely monitored by the Department of State Services (DSS), prompting fears of further security compromises.

  • Preventing Escalation: The leadership stated that the suspension aims to curb unauthorized actions and reckless rhetoric that could provoke further violence.

Furthermore, the DOS warned against the creation of new militias, stating that IPOB will no longer accept responsibility for any criminal acts or actions taken by individuals not currently holding an authorized position within the group.

Counter-Movements and Conflicting Claims

This announcement follows reports that Nnamdi Kanu had attempted to dissolve the current DOS administration. Reports attributed to IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, indicated that Kanu had appointed U.S.-based Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ as the new Head of the Directorate, instructing him to take charge of the movement’s daily management.

The Directorate of State, which has served as the administrative backbone of IPOB since its founding in 2012, remains at the center of this power struggle as the movement navigates the implications of these competing leadership claims.
