Tinubu’s Campaign Spokesperson Said Atiku’s Quest For Tinubu’s Academic Records Is A Hollow Victory

Tinubu’s Campaign Spokesperson Said Atiku’s Quest For Tinubu’s Academic Records Is A Hollow Victory....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Dr. Josef Onoh, the Southeast spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election campaigns, has asserted that the recent American court ruling on Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University provides no cause for celebration for Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, and his supporters.

Onoh emphasized that the court order would not impact the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling on the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois had ordered Chicago State University (CSU) to release President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s academic records to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar by Monday, October 2.

However, Onoh argued that the jubilation within the Atiku camp over the court order was unwarranted, as the documents would hold no significance.

He pointed out that the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), amended in 1974, already addresses the issues raised by Atiku concerning the alleged forgery of Tinubu’s Chicago State University diploma, which was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to Onoh, FERPA grants students the right to review and correct their education records, covering both informal and formal correction procedures for inaccurate or misleading data.

Furthermore, Onoh noted that issues related to President Tinubu’s background, which were not initially part of Atiku’s petition challenging the President’s victory, cannot be introduced midway into the proceedings.

In his words, “So Atiku has nothing to celebrate about. He told the US that he wanted to authenticate these documents, whether a Chicago State University diploma in the name of Bola Ahmed Tinubu dated June 22, 1979, that was submitted to the INEC before the Nigerian presidential election in February 2023 is genuine or was forged.”

“On August 2, when Atiku filed his application in the US district court, his petition challenging the presidential election was pending before the Nigerian Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. Atiku said his application in the US court was to obtain discoveries that would support his petitions in the Nigerian court of appeal.”

“However, even if Atiku returns from his wild expedition, he will still meet the same empty dinner table and no guests to serve his oysters because they have gone out of season.”

“On the matter of the US Eastern Illinois court ordering the Chicago State University to release President Bola Tinubu’s academic records to Atiku, it was clear and specific. The court ruled in favor of Atiku but only within the confines of non-privileged documents. Some of the documents requested by Atiku are FERPA-protected.”

“Thus, there is no new development to celebrate as Chicago State University had already complied with the order before the magistrate granted Atiku’s request. CSU confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended the university and graduated in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree. However, the university clarified that U.S. federal law prohibits it from providing further information about Tinubu’s record without consent or unless allowed by a court order. Therefore, Atiku and his associates have no reason for celebration, as the court clearly indicated that only non-privileged records may be released to him,” Onoh stated.

Amaechi argued that regardless of whether the election is free or flawed, Tinubu would be defeated if credible opposition candidates are on the ballot.

He also dismissed interpretations of a Court of Appeal ruling suggesting the opposition was leaderless, insisting that such claims misrepresent the law.

According to him, the government is working to prevent strong opponents from emerging by using institutions, including the judiciary, to influence party structures.

Amaechi called on authorities to allow political institutions to function independently and ensure that all parties can field candidates without interference.

He maintained that Nigerians would ultimately decide at the polls, questioning the administration’s chances amid economic challenges and ongoing insecurity.

“How can he win with the current state of the economy and security situation?” he asked.
