Professor Umaru Shehu, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, has passed away.
The news of his demise was confirmed in a statement issued by the Borno Elders Forum and signed by its Secretary, Dr. Bulama Gubio, on Monday.
Professor Shehu held the distinction of being Northern Nigeria’s first Professor of Community Health.
At the age of 97, he passed away. He was the founder of the Kanem Borno Historical and Cultural Foundation and a co-founder of the Borno Elders Forum.

Furthermore, Professor Shehu was a Professor Emeritus of Community Health at the University of Maiduguri and a former President of the Nigerian Academy of Science.
Born on December 8, 1930, in Maiduguri, Nigeria, Professor Shehu’s educational journey included attending Elementary School in Maiduguri from 1935 to 1940, Middle School in Maiduguri from 1941 to 1943, Kaduna College in Kaduna from 1944 to 1947, University College Ibadan from 1948 to 1953, and the University of Liverpool from 1953 to 1956, with a brief return in 1966-1967.
He earned a Bachelor of Medicine degree from the University of London and received a fellowship from the Institute of Cancer Research. Additionally, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the British Medical Journal.
