President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, along with the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has made an appeal to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their planned strike in response to the removal of fuel subsidy.

During a public lecture and special Juma’at prayer held to commemorate the country’s 63rd Independence Anniversary at the National Mosque in Abuja, Tinubu urged the workers to refrain from going on strike.

Represented by the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I Jibrin, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to mitigating the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

He stated: “The Sultan has talked about the issue of strike by NLC. I also call on behalf of His Excellency, the President, and the entire government that the labor leaders should shelve the strike. Let’s dialogue, let’s sit together, let’s understand ourselves, and let’s look at the prevailing situation in the country. How do we meet this country, the challenges ahead, and the current challenges? It is through dialogue that we can be able to solve our problems collectively.

“This government is new and it is working hard to bring succor to the entire people of this country. It has set aside N500bn and other packages are being unveiled to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal. Therefore, we need to support and pray for the government.”

The statement was attributed to the President by the spokesperson to the Deputy President of the Senate, Ismail Mudashir.

In addition, the Sultan implored the organized labor to reconsider the strike, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and giving the federal government another opportunity.

He said: “For God’s sake, for Allah’s sake, anybody planning to go on strike, should please give the government another chance. Please rethink and give the government another chance,” while highlighting the need for labor leaders to embrace dialogue.

The Sultan, who has been involved in labor leader-government negotiations since 2007, expressed concerns that a strike by the NLC and TUC would have more adverse effects than benefits.

Regarding the 63rd Independence Anniversary of the country, the Sultan, who also serves as the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), emphasized the importance of hope and urged everyone to maintain optimism.

He stated: “Let us have hope, we must have hope, and let us not give up. We will get it right.”

ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the push as unfair and politically motivated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Momodu was reacting to comments by activist Zekeri Idris Jnr, a supporter of Peter Obi, who urged Atiku to step aside over concerns about his age, which would be about 80 by 2027.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Momodu said attention should be focused on holding the government accountable rather than targeting Atiku’s political ambition.

The exchange followed a viral video where Idris insisted that Atiku should support younger aspirants instead of contesting, arguing that voters would not back an elderly candidate.

Idris also suggested that Atiku should act as a statesman and support younger politicians such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Responding, Momodu cited several world leaders who held office at advanced ages, arguing that experience should not be dismissed in leadership discussions.

He questioned what should disqualify Atiku from contesting, insisting that age alone is not a valid reason.

Atiku, who lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly considering another run in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
