On Friday, September 29, Senate President Godswill Akpabio unequivocally refuted any association with a Twitter account under the handle “X” (formerly Twitter), which has been wrongly attributed to him. In a statement issued by his special adviser on media and publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, titled “Disclaimer Notice: Caution Regarding Parody X Handles – Akpabio,” concerns were raised regarding the alleged presence of Parody X Handles falsely claiming to belong to Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate.

The statement clarified that these objectionable Parody X Handles bore the name “Senate President Godswill Akpabio @ oficialGAkpabio” and contained various posts supposedly depicting the activities of Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Senate sessions. To provide clarity, it was emphasized that the official and verified X Handles of the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, are “President of the Senate @SPNigeria” (the official account of the office of the President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria) and @Senator_Akpabio, his personal account.

The Senate President categorically disavowed these Parody X Handles and urged the public to dismiss them. Any X Handles other than those officially authenticated and verified for the President of the Senate are unauthorized.

Furthermore, it was noted that the Senate President was not oblivious to the possibility that certain individuals had created these Parody X Handles with the intention of disseminating fabricated news and information that could incite public discord and hostility.

Nevertheless, the Senate President reassured conscientious Nigerians that he remains unwavering in his commitment to providing authentic leadership to the 10th Senate and collaborating with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to advance the Renewed Hope Agenda and reform the nation to ensure that the common citizens can benefit from good governance. No amount of distraction or mischief will deter him from this noble pursuit.

The Federal Government has provided clarification regarding the Transfer of Sentenced Persons Agreement signed with Ethiopia. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, stated that the agreement is a diplomatic and humanitarian initiative designed to allow Nigerians convicted in Ethiopia to serve the remainder of their sentences in their home country.

  • Clarification on Inmate Numbers: Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu dismissed a viral list claiming there are 136 Nigerian inmates, clarifying that the agreement actually covers 98 prisoners located across two maximum-security facilities, Kaliti and Aba Samuel.

  • Humanitarian Rationale: The transfer aims to address the precarious conditions faced by these inmates, which include poor feeding, health challenges, lack of medical facilities, denial of visitation rights, and language barriers.

  • Safeguards Against Early Release: The Minister refuted concerns that transferred inmates would be pardoned upon arrival, noting that the memorandum of understanding explicitly prohibits granting amnesty or pardon without the consent of the sentencing state.

  • Rejection of Ethnic Bias: Addressing claims regarding the origin of the inmates, the Minister debunked allegations that the prisoners are from only one region, emphasizing that the 98 individuals originate from various parts of Nigeria, including the Southeast, Southwest, and South-South.

  • Urgency of Action: The need for the agreement was underscored by the fact that four Nigerian prisoners died while the two nations were finalizing the deal.
