The abductors of Benue State’s Commissioner of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Mathew Abo, have issued a ransom demand of N60 million for his release. Abo was kidnapped from his residence in Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) last Sunday. The armed bandits arrived at the commissioner’s residence on four motorcycles and forced him to sit on one of them before riding away to an undisclosed location.

Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has strongly condemned the incident and called on security agencies to work diligently to secure the commissioner’s release.

Criminal activities have been on the rise in the Sankara axis, particularly in Ukum LGA, with increased activities by both herdsmen militias and local bandits. To pressure for their demands, the kidnappers have resorted to coercive measures, including torturing the victim, in order to compel the payment of the ransom.

Reliable sources have revealed that the kidnappers communicated their ransom demand during a phone call with a member of the commissioner’s family. They placed the phone on speaker so that the family could hear Abo’s cries for help in the background as he was being tortured.
