The 2024 World Universities Rankings, covering 108 countries and regions, has been released by Times Higher Education.
In Nigeria, 15 universities have made it onto the list, with Covenant University securing the top position. The University of Ibadan follows in second place, while the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and the University of Lagos occupy the third and fourth spots, respectively.
On a global scale, the University of Oxford retains its first-place ranking for the eighth consecutive year. However, there have been shifts in the ranks of other top institutions. Stanford University has ascended to second place, displacing Harvard University to fourth.

This year’s ranking involved an analysis of over 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications and incorporated survey responses from 68,402 scholars worldwide. In total, data from 411,789 data points were collected from more than 2,673 institutions that provided information, as reported by Times Higher Education.

In a strong rebuttal, OK Movement Director General, John Ughulu, asserted the group’s complete political and financial independence. Ughulu emphasized that the movement does not rely on Obi or the NDC for funding, stating, “Consequently, the movement does not and has not required any financial support from His Excellency, Peter Obi… to establish or operate its own organisational structure.”
