The National Assembly has committed to providing support to the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in order to enhance water transportation throughout the nation.
Mr. Victor Ogene, Chairman of the National Assembly ad-hoc Committee on Mass Transportation, affirmed this commitment during the committee’s visit to the NIWA Liaison Office in Abuja on Monday.
He expressed the readiness of the National Assembly to assist NIWA in harnessing the business potential of Nigeria’s waterways, which remain largely untapped. Ogene explained that this decision was part of the efforts to establish alternative transportation options to mitigate the impact of subsidy removal.
The committee’s primary objective is to conduct a fact-finding mission to understand NIWA’s assets and challenges and work toward resolving them to improve waterway transportation.

Ogene emphasized the numerous business opportunities associated with well-regulated waterways, including the potential for tourism. He also assured that the National Assembly would empower NIWA to effectively carry out its regulatory role in overseeing water transportation.
Furthermore, Ogene announced that the National Assembly intends to hold a public hearing where the NIWA leadership can present their insights and perspectives on waterway transportation.
Dr. George Moghalu, the Managing Director of NIWA, emphasized that waterway transportation would connect various states across the country. He noted that this development would facilitate the movement of people and goods between states and alleviate road congestion.
Moghalu highlighted the vast potential of the blue economy, which, if properly harnessed, could reduce Nigeria’s dependence on oil. He mentioned NIWA’s intention to collaborate with private investors to enhance business opportunities on waterways and ongoing efforts to clear obstacles like weeds from the water routes.
