Military Coups In West Africa Not A Solution To Bad Leadership....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Duro Meseko, has voiced his concerns about the surge in military coups within the West African sub-region. He noted that while most military interventions stem from poor leadership and leaders attempting to cling to power in affected nations, forcibly seizing power is not a viable solution.

Meseko, speaking during an interactive session with journalists on Monday, did not believe that Nigeria’s democracy exhibited a tendency to hold on to power.

When asked if he was worried about the spread of military coups to six West African countries, including neighboring Niger Republic, and if he feared that democratically elected leaders in Nigeria might also face overthrow, he responded, “Yes, I am concerned about the resurgence of military coups, especially in some West African countries. I had believed that this era was behind us. For me, it is not a positive development at all.

However, I must emphasize this: in some of the countries where we witness these military interventions, some members of the political class may not have performed adequately. Still, forcefully taking over the government is not the solution, and those celebrating such actions will soon regret it.”

He further stated, “Some of these leaders swore an oath of office that they have not upheld. Some are amending constitutions to suit their personal desires. Some take an oath for 8 years but end up staying in power for 20 years or more. However, in the case of Nigeria, as you’ve asked whether I have such concerns for Nigeria, let me make it clear that I do not harbor such fears for Nigeria because, since 1999, no government in Nigeria has attempted to exceed the constitutionally prescribed term in office. Even under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, when the Third Term agenda was proposed, it failed and failed miserably. If we had a government attempting to extend its constitutionally stipulated term, there would understandably be tension and such concerns might arise.”

Meseko concluded by emphasizing the troubling nature of the current wave of coups on the continent and called on the political class in African countries to uphold their oaths and adhere to the constitutional limits of their time in office. He warned that failure to do so would result in the kind of unrest witnessed in several nations recently. Meseko underlined the significance of democracy, where citizens have the freedom to voice their opinions and protest, contrasting it with military rule, which suppresses these rights and freedoms.

The Fulham midfielder was a key figure throughout the tournament, starting every match except Nigeria’s group-stage game against Uganda. He contributed two assists in six appearances and was central to much of the team’s attacking play. In Saturday’s third-place playoff, Iwobi came off the bench in the final 25 minutes and calmly converted the decisive penalty to clinch victory.

Reflecting on the game, he admitted the mental strain on the squad following their semi-final loss to hosts Morocco.

“We were surrounded by doubts after not making it to the World Cup,” Iwobi told beIN SPORTS.
“We wanted to win gold but ended up finishing third. The match was mentally tough because it’s hard for any player to forget the pain of losing in the semi-finals. I also don’t agree with having a third-place match, but in the end, we managed to win it.”

“The Egyptian team played well, and we studied videos to prepare. Morocco is a beautiful country with great stadiums and hotels. I enjoyed the welcome and visiting Marrakech; everything was impressive,” he added.

Nigeria’s bronze finish rounded off a strong campaign, though the team fell short of its ultimate goal. Forward Ademola Lookman echoed Iwobi’s sentiments, noting that the squad came to Morocco with one clear objective: gold.

“Everyone wanted the gold medal. We came for the trophy, but it didn’t happen,” Lookman said.
“We leave the tournament with bronze, and that is enough.”

Lookman was Nigeria’s most productive player at AFCON 2025, scoring three goals and providing four assists, the tournament’s highest combined total, putting him in contention for a spot in the official Team of the Tournament.

Prior to their semi-final loss to Morocco, Nigeria had been the only unbeaten team in the competition, winning all five of their matches. The dramatic penalty shootout defeat ended their flawless run and denied the three-time African champions a spot in the final.

The Super Eagles have now finished third at AFCON nine times: 1976, 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2019, and most recently in 2025 in Morocco.

“Destiny went to rest. After his child’s naming ceremony, about four days later, we went to Oba Edu Ifayomi, who traditionally initiated him. The sickness caught up with him there, causing him to collapse. We immediately took him to the hospital. Oba Edu kept supporting us, sending money even as he was transferred to other hospitals. When we realized the sickness was persistent, we decided on traditional care, and Oba Edu guided us personally,” she said.
