The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, affirmed that Nigerians have embraced democracy with its fundamental principles as the most favorable form of governance, despite the recent coups in some parts of the ECOWAS sub-region. He conveyed this during a press briefing regarding Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Day celebrations.

Senator Akume acknowledged that the nation has suffered from poor governance, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is resolute in addressing corruption and mismanagement of resources, exemplified by the removal of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele.

He further disclosed that the report of the Special Investigator appointed by the President to examine CBN activities will soon be made public, shedding light on the nation’s current situation.

Due to the economic challenges and global economic downturn, President Tinubu has authorized a subdued celebration while the government strives to alleviate the situation. Akume also mentioned upcoming events, including a Presidential Broadcast, an Inter-Denominational Church Service, and a Military Parade.

Disagreement Over the Arrest Warrant

The decision to issue the warrant followed a contentious debate among committee members:

  • Calls for Lenience: Senators Saliu Mustapha and Tony Nwoye urged Chairman Ibrahim Dankwambo to grant Kyari additional time, citing reports that the former executive is currently receiving medical treatment in Germany.
