Justice Binta Zubairu of the Court of Appeal has addressed a prevailing misconception, emphasizing that judges should not be held responsible for the delays in the justice system, a belief held by some Nigerians.
Zubairu made these remarks during a reception held in her honor in Zaria, following her recent appointment as a Justice of the Court.

She stated, “Judges work as part of a team that includes the prosecution, lawyers, and others. The expeditious dispensation of justice hinges on the timely efforts of the police, effective prosecution, the proper assembly of evidence by lawyers, and their correct presentation before the judges in accordance with the law.”
Zubairu further pointed out that often, judges or magistrates are prepared to adjudicate, but the prosecution may not be ready, or lawyers may provide various excuses. These challenges are evident in the courts, but judges, unable to voice their frustrations, end up bearing the blame for delays.
She also noted that the police frequently take longer than usual to conclude investigations in straightforward cases.
Expressing her gratitude, Justice Zubairu thanked God for becoming the first female in the Zazzau Emirate to be elevated to the position of Justice of the Court of Appeal. Reflecting on her childhood aspirations, she revealed that she initially aspired to become a school principal to ensure that all children had access to education. However, destiny led her to a career in the judiciary, a path she had not initially imagined.
