The Head of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) National Office, Patrick Areghan, announced on Saturday that the organization is considering implementing the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode for its examinations.
Areghan shared this information during a briefing with journalists in Lagos, discussing the achievements of WAEC under his leadership. He is set to conclude his three-year tenure on October 1.
Areghan explained that the incorporation of CBT into the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and other tests conducted by WAEC has long been part of his vision for the institution.
He stated, “We have already initiated efforts concerning the CBT examination. We have made substantial progress in our planning, and even within the sub-region, the council’s registrar is also working on this.”

However, Areghan acknowledged that the transition to CBT poses challenges, particularly in terms of conducting practical and essay papers. While it’s feasible for objective questions, other factors such as computer literacy, access to computer facilities, and a stable power supply must be considered. He emphasized that these are crucial aspects to address.
Areghan emphasized his desire for WAEC to gain international recognition and collaborate with other countries in the sub-region to enable Nigerian students in the Diaspora to take the WASSCE overseas. He also expressed his wish for the digital certificate, successfully launched in Nigeria, to be extended throughout the sub-region, allowing candidates to access their digital certificates from anywhere in the world, providing a convenient solution in cases of certificate loss or damage.
He stated, “This is a legacy I want to leave behind.”

Commending the administration’s trajectory, the former governor expressed strong optimism about the president securing a second term, emphasizing that the party remains firmly committed to honoring the pledges made during its electoral campaigns.
“I want to assure Nigerians that whatever promise we made during campaign, we shall keep to our promises,” Yari stated, while urging continued prayers and unity for the leadership. He further expressed confidence that the ruling party will sustain its governance mandate well beyond the conclusion of the president’s tenure.

Speaking at a National Symposium in Jos on Sunday focused on political participation and social justice, the cleric clarified that his earlier comments—which followed his support for the Muslim-Muslim ticket and his use of the term “infidels”—were not intended to express hatred.
“A lot of people are saying I dislike Christians. I didn’t say I dislike Christians. It is a lie. My remarks were misinterpreted,” Sheikh Jingir asserted. He emphasized that Islamic leadership is rooted in justice, fairness, and promoting peaceful coexistence, citing the example of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The cleric further warned that Muslims would be held accountable for mistreating non-Muslims. He also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, and other leaders to govern with equity, urging them not to discriminate against citizens based on religion or political affiliation.
Jingir concluded by affirming that every Nigerian holds the fundamental right to support and vote for any candidate of their choice during elections.
