A commercial bus driver has been apprehended for stabbing a Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) operative. The incident occurred on Sunday when the driver, operating a Volkswagen ‘T4’ commercial bus with registration number LSR 966 YE, was stopped for causing serious traffic obstruction near the Costain roundabout.
Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, confirmed the incident. According to Olajide Olukoga, the LASTMA officer leading the enforcement team, the Volkswagen commercial ‘T4’ bus was apprehended for picking up passengers on the main expressway, leading to significant traffic disruptions for other road users.

The enforcement operation took place at the Costain roundabout, heading towards Iponrin, following multiple warnings from the government to commercial bus and private car drivers to use designated bus stops for passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.
Olukoga explained, “Our enforcement team managed to apprehend the driver despite his attempts to escape with dangerous driving. He then produced a knife and stabbed me.”
“After witnessing the severity of the knife wound, he proceeded to undress and caused a disturbance before being arrested by the police from Iponri Police Station.”
Upon the driver’s arrest, security officers discovered dangerous weapons, including cutlasses and knives, inside his commercial Volkswagen ‘T4’ bus.
A directive has been issued to immediately prosecute the arrested driver as a deterrent to other defiant drivers, stated Taofiq.

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
A Delta State High Court has handed down death sentences to two individuals for their involvement in the 2018 killing of Delta State University (DELSU) undergraduate Elozino Ogege, following a ruling that found them guilty. Meanwhile, a third co-defendant facing charges related to the same incident was discharged and acquitted.
