Danbatta highlighted the vast potential of AI to revolutionize industries, enhance productivity, and enhance the quality of life for citizens. He expressed his belief that AI will play a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s digital future, citing examples of AI-powered applications in daily life, such as voice assistants, mobile phone face recognition, fingerprint biometrics, and machine learning-based financial fraud detection.
He noted that AI has made significant advancements in various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, finance, transportation, education, and governance. AI-powered solutions have the potential to address critical challenges in Africa, such as limited access to healthcare, food security, financial inclusion, and infrastructure development.
To fully embrace AI’s benefits, Danbatta outlined several critical factors that need attention:
1. **Investment in Digital Infrastructure:** Building the necessary digital infrastructure, including expanding broadband connectivity, is essential for AI adoption. In July 2023, Nigeria’s broadband penetration stood at 47.01%. Reliable power supply and a conducive regulatory environment are also crucial.
2. **Digital Skills Development:** Developing a skilled workforce capable of working with AI technologies is essential. Education and training programs should equip youth with the skills needed to participate in the AI-driven economy.
3. **Ethical Considerations:** Ethical principles should underpin AI deployment, ensuring transparency, accountability, fairness, privacy protection, data security, and human rights.
4. **Collaboration and Partnerships:** Collaborative efforts among governments, regulatory bodies, academia, the private sector, and civil society are vital to create an enabling environment for AI adoption. Sharing knowledge and resources can drive innovation.
Danbatta affirmed the NCC’s commitment to supporting the development and deployment of AI technologies in Nigeria and across Africa. The NCC is working on an enabling regulatory framework, collaborating on AI research and development centers, incubation hubs, and startup ecosystems to nurture homegrown AI talent. Danbatta urged collective action to seize the opportunity and build an inclusive, sustainable, AI-powered Africa.
