Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NCC, emphasized the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as one of the most transformative technologies during his keynote address at the 11th edition of the Digital Africa Conference & Exhibition in Abuja. The conference theme, “Artificial Intelligence and Africa,” reflects the NCC’s commitment to leveraging technology for economic growth, social development, and innovation across the continent.

Danbatta highlighted the vast potential of AI to revolutionize industries, enhance productivity, and enhance the quality of life for citizens. He expressed his belief that AI will play a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s digital future, citing examples of AI-powered applications in daily life, such as voice assistants, mobile phone face recognition, fingerprint biometrics, and machine learning-based financial fraud detection.

He noted that AI has made significant advancements in various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, finance, transportation, education, and governance. To fully embrace AI’s benefits, Danbatta outlined several critical factors that need attention:

1. **Investment in Digital Infrastructure:** Building the necessary digital infrastructure, including expanding broadband connectivity, is essential for AI adoption. In July 2023, Nigeria’s broadband penetration stood at 47.01%. Reliable power supply and a conducive regulatory environment are also crucial.

2. **Digital Skills Development:** Developing a skilled workforce capable of working with AI technologies is essential. Education and training programs should equip youth with the skills needed to participate in the AI-driven economy.
