Open Letter To President Tinubu: Amb. Oluwafemi Recommends A Paradigm Shift In Social Relief....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Ambassador Victor Walsh Oluwafemi, CEO of the Africa Development Study Centre (ADSC), has penned an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, advocating for a shift in Nigeria’s approach to social relief efforts. Oluwafemi argues that the country should transition from a palliative-centric approach to one focused on social interventions.

In his letter titled “Rebranding Nigeria’s Social Relief Efforts: Why We Must Shift from ‘Palliative’ to ‘Social Interventions’,” Oluwafemi emphasizes the need for a change in terminology. He believes that the term “palliative” often implies short-term, stopgap measures rather than sustainable, comprehensive strategies for improvement.

Oluwafemi acknowledges the significant progress achieved in political and economic reforms under President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s leadership. However, he highlights the importance of reconsidering the language used to describe social and economic relief efforts.

He argues that “palliative” has become synonymous with short-term relief programs, which can discourage long-term investments, both in terms of intellectual and financial resources, needed to address complex social issues effectively.

Instead, Oluwafemi proposes the adoption of the term “Social Interventions” as more than just a replacement term. He sees it as a paradigm shift that imbues social and economic relief programs with a sense of permanency and strategy. This change in terminology, he believes, can promote a shift in mindset from quick fixes to long-term planning and systematic implementation.

Oluwafemi concludes that words play a crucial role in shaping perceptions, actions, and policies. By embracing “Social Interventions” as a term, Nigeria can foster a culture of strategic planning and systematic change, ultimately working towards more sustainable and impactful social relief efforts.
