The NLC had previously staged a two-day nationwide strike earlier in the month to protest the government’s inability to provide lasting solutions to the issues arising from the removal of fuel subsidies.
The union alleged that the government had not implemented some of the resolutions from their prior meetings.
The initial invitation for talks by the minister was extended to both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to prevent the two-day strike, which took place on September 5th and 6th. However, only the TUC participated in the meeting, according to Mr. Lalong.
During the Monday meeting, Commissioner Owohunwa expressed the government’s willingness to collaborate with the union to address their demands, acknowledging the critical role played by the NLC in advocating for workers’ rights and welfare.
In response, Mr. Ajaero expressed a sense of cautious optimism but noted that past meetings had failed to produce positive outcomes. He highlighted that the strikes were a result of worker frustration caused by the hardships stemming from the fuel subsidy removal, with none of the government’s agreements being addressed.
A series of key issues, including the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), refinery operation, wage awards, and cash transfers, were mentioned, with no progress in addressing any of these concerns.
Another meeting has been scheduled for a later date to continue discussions.
