A mature male individual narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation when he tumbled from the highest floor after two buildings, located at 47/49 Oduntan Street, Kosofe, Ketu, Lagos, suffered a partial collapse.
Prompt rescue efforts led to the victim’s retrieval and subsequent transport to a medical facility for treatment.
The incident involved two neighboring structures, one being a two-storey building and the other a four-storey building. These buildings housed over 500 occupants, and their structural integrity was compromised due to heavy rainfall on Saturday.

The collapse of these buildings was attributed to their aging condition and the lack of proper maintenance by the owner.
Under the oversight of a collaborative team consisting of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), residents were instructed to vacate the premises to avert any further potential disasters.
It was gathered that the affected building would be demolished since it failed a structural integrity assessment, posing a serious risk to the public and adjacent structures.
The General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, affirmed the agency’s commitment to swiftly removing all compromised structures within the Agboye Compound in Ketu. He noted that LASBCA had issued prior eviction notices before the building sections succumbed to the heavy rainfall on Saturday, successfully evacuating more than 500 residents to safeguard them from impending collapse.
Oki emphasized that despite multiple notices issued by the agency, some residents had resisted vacating the buildings, which exhibited signs of severe deterioration. He further pointed out that the structural stability of approximately eight buildings within the compound could not be assured, as various sections were showing signs of imminent collapse.
He stressed that these compromised structures must be demolished to prevent potential casualties and safeguard the overall built environment. Oki also issued a warning that more stringent measures would be taken against those who disregard notices and directives from the agency.
