In a fierce confrontation, combined forces of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police successfully eliminated three combatants associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed faction, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). This engagement occurred during a clearance operation conducted in the early hours of September 18, 2023, at Igboro Forest, situated between Arochukwu and Ohafia local government areas of Abia State.

According to Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, the operation resulted in the destruction of multiple clandestine camps used by these groups for carrying out heinous acts and training new recruits.

The troops made substantial recoveries during the operation, including various weapons and ammunition such as an improvised 16 multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) mounted on a vehicle, an improvised 12 MBRL gun, an improvised six MBRL gun, one AK-47 rifle, a Dane gun, six locally made rocket launchers, four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), five fragmental jackets, a Baofeng radio, military camouflage uniforms, and various amulets.

Additionally, the military, in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force, acted upon credible intelligence and dismantled an IPOB/ESN hideout in Ezioha Mgbowo, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. This operation thwarted the armed fighters’ plans to enforce an unlawful sit-at-home order in the region. Three of the combatants were neutralized during the operation, while others dispersed hastily. Three pump-action guns and ten machetes were confiscated from the fleeing individuals.
