Once again, the Federal Government has extended an invitation to the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for a meeting aimed at resolving the issues surrounding the impending industrial action. This meeting is slated to take place on Monday, September 18, 2023.

The disclosure was made in a statement released on Sunday by Olajide Oshundun, the Director of Information at the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Oshundun conveyed that Simon Bako Lalong, the Minister of Labour and Employment, has directed the Department of Trade Unions Services and Industrial Relations to organize this meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The Minister emphasized the significance of the Unions engaging in dialogue with the Government to address all pending matters and prevent further disruptions to the economy. He underscored the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to engage with organized labor, respond to their concerns, and uphold industrial harmony, which is vital for the realization of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

NEMA Responds To Flood Alert Controversy And Urges Public Vigilance

The invitation by the federal government comes in the wake of the recent two-day warning strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress to protest the widespread hardship and suffering resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy. The NLC had initially skipped an earlier meeting with the Federal Government to embark on the strike, and they subsequently called it off after the two-day warning strike.

The NLC had also issued a notice of a potential total and indefinite shutdown of the economy within 14 working days or 21 days following the warning strike if the government failed to take measures to address the hardship being experienced across the country.
