The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, inaugurated the rehabilitation of 135 roads in the territory on Monday, accompanied by a stern warning to both contractors handling the projects and the FCT’s team of engineers against any contract variations.
Wike specified a completion timeline of six months and assured that the FCTA would promptly pay the contractors in full to ensure the projects’ timely completion.

He emphasized, “To the contractors, let me warn you now. All these things you are doing with Engineering Services (department) will not work again. Nothing like variation; it will not work… We have the money to pay you. So, if you like to go to engineering services and do anything with them, it will not work.”
Furthermore, Wike cautioned the Permanent Secretary in the Administration, Mr. Olusade Adesola, against submitting any papers seeking reconsideration or files for unanticipated issues, asserting that all aspects had been carefully considered.
The minister called on residents to support the contractors to ensure the projects are completed on time, acknowledging that no development comes without some disruptions. He sought the support of traditional rulers in mobilizing youths and residents to cooperate with the contractors.
Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the Minister of State for FCT, highlighted the Administration’s significant achievements in transforming the capital city, especially within the first three weeks of Wike taking office.
Mr. Ahmed Hadi, Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), noted that many roads in Phase I, developed since the 1980s, have deteriorated. The rehabilitation project will include scarification and the removal of existing asphalt in some locations, with asphalt overlay in others, covering approximately 42 kilometers across areas such as Wuse, Garki, parts of Maitama, and Asokoro.
Hadi explained that upon completion, the rehabilitated roads will lead to improved traffic flow, reduced travel time, and increased safety on the roads.
