Why I Surrendered – Rugurugu, Boko Haram Commander

Mallam Adamu Rugurugu, a captured Boko Haram commander, says he decided to come out of the jungle with many of his men after the entreaties and personal intervention of Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.
Rugurugu, speaking at the Maiduguri camp where almost 14, 000 surrendered terrorists and their families were housed and cared for, said he received his name from his ferocious exploits on the battlefield against government soldiers.

He did, however, mention that he later realized what he was doing was wrong and that the government was sincere in receiving them, which led to his choice to aid in convincing numerous fighters to come out of the bush and surrender.
“Yes, I am one of the commanders,” he said.
From the battlefield, I received the name Rugurugu, which means “no mercy.”
I was incredibly dangerous on the battlefield because I usually destroyed everything in my path.
I had no dread.
These scars and marks you see all over me are the result of my fearlessness.
The governor had heard about me and understood that if I was persuaded to come out, a large number of soldiers would follow, which is how we came out and surrendered.
“At this camp, I will say government and Gen Abdel Ishaq are doing a lot for us surrendered fighters. They convinced and assured me that if I abandoned this cause which is of no benefit, we will be catered for. Our women and children are well looked after. When anyone falls sick, we have medical people here to treat them”.
Rugurugu, on the other hand, was removed from the hardened terrorist list because he had been enormously instrumental and successful in communicating with, and convincing many of the fighters to surrender their arms, assuring them that the federal and state governments were sincere in receiving them.

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

  • Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

  • The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

  • Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
