Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ Fails To Qualify For The Last Round Of 16.

The introduction of Lukaku at the interval changed the game, but he was guilty of three dreadful misses as Zlatko Dalic’s side rode their luck to hold on.
Croatia progressed as runners-up in Group F behind winners Morocco who beat Canada 2-1 to also qualify for the last 16.
Belgium, the world’s second-ranked side, saw their run of reaching at least the quarter-finals at four straight major tournaments come to an abrupt end.
Roberto Martinez’s men managed just one goal in the tournament in a fortunate opening 1-0 win over Canada.
Martinez dropped captain Eden Hazard to the bench as one of four changes which also saw Leandro Trossard and Dries Mertens start for the first time in Qatar.
The build-up to the match had been dominated by rumours of an altercation between senior Belgian players, involving Eden Hazard, which Martinez described as “fake news”.
Croatia almost took the lead inside the first 10 seconds, as the ball was played forward to Ivan Perisic after kick-off and the Tottenham man cut inside and drilled a shot just wide of the far post.
The likelihood of Belgium needing to win was increased when Morocco scored an early goal across Doha. Yannick Carrasco had a chance to open the scoring but his shot was blocked.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, the FRSC Sector Commander in Bauchi, Apaji Boyi, revealed that a total of 76 crashes occurred between October and December, with 193 passengers escaping unhurt.
Breaking down the figures, Boyi said October saw 10 crashes involving 77 people, resulting in eight deaths and 58 injuries. November recorded 25 crashes with 201 individuals involved, leaving 14 dead and 144 injured. December was the deadliest month, with 41 crashes affecting 433 people, causing 28 fatalities and 266 injuries.
The sector commander attributed many accidents to factors such as speeding, reckless overtaking, driver fatigue, overloading, and the unsafe transport of passengers in trucks carrying goods. He also warned against motorists travelling with fuel stored in plastic containers, which further heightens the risk of accidents.
Boyi emphasised that driver behaviour remains a key factor in highway safety, highlighting violations like ignoring traffic rules, using drugs, failing to wear seat belts, and making phone calls while driving as major contributors to preventable crashes.
He commended the Federal Government for its support of the Corps and urged motorists to maintain their vehicles, exercise caution, and comply with traffic laws. Boyi assured that the FRSC would continue to conduct public awareness campaigns to enhance road safety across Bauchi State.

The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh representing Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made the appeal shortly after two other legislators publicly urged restraint and dialogue over the impeachment process.
Earlier in the week, lawmakers Sylvanus Eyinna Nwankwo and Peter Abbey called on their colleagues to approach the dispute with caution and understanding, advocating alternatives to impeachment as a means of resolving tensions between the legislative and executive branches of government.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, Minority Leader Nwankwo, who represents Omuma State Constituency, said that appeals from community and political leaders had urged leniency and reconciliation. He encouraged fellow legislators to reconsider the impeachment and pursue peaceful solutions.
Abbey, representing Degema State Constituency, acknowledged that the governor may have breached constitutional provisions but emphasised the importance of allowing for corrective measures, noting that leaders have a responsibility to prevent similar issues in the future.
