Amidst Rising Insecurity, FG Reduces the Proposed Police Budget By N92.9 Billion.

The Federal Government has lowered the Nigeria Police Force’s projected budget by over N93 billion, a condition that the security outfit has warned will stymie its efforts to properly combat the country’s growing insecurity.
The police blamed the reduction mostly on the government’s envelope budgeting system and urged the National Assembly to exclude the NPF from it.
In a presentation to the National Assembly, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, decried the Budget Office of the Federation’s slashing of the outfit’s proposed budget from N889,681,595,517.74 to N796,785,034,379.56, warning of the impact on the security outfit and its consequences for the country.
The IG made this known to the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Police Affairs on Tuesday behind closed doors while defending the proposed budget of the NPF in the 2023 Appropriation Bill.

While the police are statutorily in charge of internal security, the Armed Forces are to protect the territorial integrity of the country, against external aggression.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

However, several security committees of the National Assembly and Service Chief have on different occasions expressed dissatisfaction that the military was now involved in internal operations in almost all the 36 states of the federation.

For example, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defense, Babajimi Benson, stated on November 9, 2021, following a 2022 budget defense session with the Defense Space Administration, that the Armed Forces were carrying out their obligations despite their limited resources.
“When there is kidnapping or banditry in Nigeria, everyone phones the Armed Forces.”
Our Armed Forces are taking on roles that have historically been entrusted to the police,” he remarked in part.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces have received nearly N1.248 trillion in budgetary support.
The Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, and Nigerian Navy would receive the greatest share of the record military budget, totaling N638,108,156,198, N174,423,669,604 and N158,790,615,183, respectively , out of the 18 military and defense organizations awarded the whole figure.The police boss also criticised the N35,705,675,512 allocation to capital expenditure of the NPF in 2023.

“This figure is also grossly inadequate to meet the capital cost of the force in relation to acquisition of critical operational assets including patrol vehicles, arms and ammunition, aircraft, intelligence/surveillance equipment as well as infrastructural items to optimally meet our policing mandate, particularly in the face of current complex security and criminal threats that the Force is dealing with across the country,” Baba stated.

A former security guard, 22-year-old Sodeinde Olajuwon Phillips, has confessed to his involvement in the murder of Olakitan Ibiyola Oyesiku, a retired Ogun State broadcaster widely known as Aunty Kitan. The 67-year-old Oyesiku, who had retired from Ogun State Television, was killed along with her current security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, at her residence in Agodo village, Kobape, Abeokuta.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The investigation into the deaths was spearheaded by the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, who revealed that a crucial handwritten note found at the scene played a pivotal role in leading detectives to the suspects.

“We met her lying, facing upward to the sky, and we saw a paper, a note on her chest, and we equally found the same paper differently spread on the table in the living room,” Ojajuni stated. He further explained, “We discovered that the one that was met on her chest, the handwriting was totally different from the others that were spread.”

The use of intelligence gathering and technical tracking enabled the police to recover the deceased’s Lexus RX 330 and subsequently arrest three suspects. They were identified as Olajuwon (the former employee), 27-year-old Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, and 36-year-old Sobu Obafunsho.

A Tragic Motive: Money for Rent and Perceived Unfair Pay Upon questioning, Olajuwon provided a detailed and disturbing account of why the attack was orchestrated. He explained that a primary motive was the need for money to secure new housing for himself and Ayoola.

“My name is Sodeinde Olajuwon Phillips, and I am 22 years old. Myself, Shakirudeen and Sobu participated in the robbery and killing,” he confessed. He further elaborated, “We did it because she did not pay us well when we worked for her.”

Describing the robbery, Olajuwon recounted: “Shakirudeen and I needed more money to rent an apartment. So, we wore masks, forced the security guard to ring the bell, and after gaining entry, the security guard was taken back to his post.”

Following the attack, the group stole Oyesiku’s vehicle. Olajuwon detailed their escape, saying, “We left with her vehicle. Shakirudeen drove the car while we left together. We collected it from her before she died and drove to Onikolobo. I alighted under the bridge and went straight home, while Shakirudeen drove away with the vehicle.”

The stolen Lexus RX 330 was later recovered by the police in proximity to Olajuwon’s residence. The investigators found that the vehicle’s license plates had been removed and concealed under one of the seats.

  • Investigations traced over ₦1.4 billion and four landed properties to Yisawu, which have also been placed under interim forfeiture while prosecutors prepare formal charges.
