No Age Hike!” – FG Dismisses Rumors of New 12‑Year Requirement for JSS1 Admission

It also reaffirmed that the approved minimum age for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions remains 16 years.
These clarifications were contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, in response to a report published by The Punch newspaper.
Alausa faulted the publication, describing it as false and misleading, and stressed that no such policy change had been made by the Federal Government.
“The Federal Ministry of Education has noted with concern a false and misleading publication by The Punch Newspaper, claiming that the Federal Government has set a new minimum age of 12 years for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1). This report is entirely inaccurate, did not emanate from any official source, and does not reflect government policy,” the statement read.
The Minister made it clear that the minimum entry age for JSS1 remains 10 years, and no pupil should complete primary education below that age. Any claim to the contrary, he said, should be ignored by the public and all education stakeholders.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the minimum age for admission into JSS1 remains 10 years. Any suggestion otherwise is misleading and should be disregarded,” the statement added.
Alausa further reiterated that the minimum age for university admission remains 16 years, regardless of how early a student finishes secondary school.
“This age benchmark is in place to ensure students are cognitively and emotionally ready for higher education,” he said.
The Minister urged the public, educational institutions, and media outlets to verify information from official channels before acting on or publishing reports.
“The Federal Ministry of Education remains committed to transparency and to implementing policies that promote age-appropriate learning in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement concluded.
