The students were taken from the school premises while preparing for their exams, a distressing event that led to widespread concern and a robust response from state authorities. The state government, deciding against paying the ransom, launched a combined “kinetic and non-kinetic” offensive against the abductors, which has been partly credited for these successful rescues.

Tragically, two students were killed by their captors last week, an act that has intensified the resolve of state officials.

In his announcement, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating kidnapping and ensuring the safety of its citizens.

“The Kogi State Government has announced the rescue of the remaining eight kidnapped students of Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara. The Governor has directed full support towards the recovery of the students and their parents while modalities are being put in place to make Kogi safer for all,” the statement read.

The government expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing the mobilization of resources to ensure the students’ rescue. Acknowledgments were also extended to the National Security Adviser, the Chiefs of Army, Navy, and Air Staff, the Director General of DSS, the Inspector General of Police, and all officers and men of the Armed Forces for their efforts in reuniting the kidnapped students with their families.

The Kogi State Command of all security agencies, including the Police, DSS, NSCDC, and local hunters, were also commended for their contributions to this achievement.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo expressed immense gratitude to his Kwara State counterpart, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazak, for his personal commitment, cooperation, and support in the operation that led to the rescue of the remaining kidnapped students. Governor AbdulRazak’s actions reinforced the Kogi/Kwara cooperation and unity of purpose.

The statement also emphasized the administration’s ongoing efforts to recalibrate security architecture and focus on the Safe School Initiative. As the state with the lowest number of out-of-school children in the North, Kogi has implemented structures to keep schools safe and ensure every child’s right to education.

Kogi has domesticated the Child Rights Act and is committed to defending children’s right to quality education. Education in Kogi State is free up to the secondary school level, and the state covers registration fees for all internal and external examinations, with a budgetary allocation exceeding the UNESCO benchmark for education. These measures aim to educate children and make them responsible contributors to Nigeria’s economy.

The government urged citizens to volunteer intelligence to security agencies to prevent crime, emphasizing that this is safer, cheaper, and better for all. The collective effort is crucial to defeating banditry, kidnapping, and any form of criminality in society.
