According to a statement by the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, the confrontation occurred following a tip-off received by the police.

“On Monday, May 27th, 2024, at approximately 11:30 hours, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with Fulani Vigilantes, acting on credible intelligence, engaged armed hoodlums numbering about three inside Ankumi forest,” the statement revealed.

The swift response was initiated by the DPO, CSP Oguche Richard, who mobilized his patrol team alongside the Fulani Vigilantes upon receiving the information. The joint team swiftly moved to the area and encountered the armed suspects at around 14:30 hours. A firefight ensued as the criminals opened fire on the approaching team, prompting a retaliatory response.

“Due to the superior firepower of the Police team, two of the hoodlums were fatally wounded while the other escaped with bullet wounds,” the statement continued.

Among the items recovered from the scene were one AK-47 rifle with two magazines and two rounds of live ammunition. Efforts are currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

Commissioner of Police Bethrand Onuoha commended the officers for their courage and unwavering commitment to combatting crime. He reassured the citizens of Kogi State of the police force’s steadfast determination to collaborate with other security agencies to safeguard lives and property.

The incident underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to tackle the menace of banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities in the region, as part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety and security of residents.
