The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to resist any attempts by politicians to incite unrest in Kano State. CISLAC’s executive director, Mallam Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, emphasized that these political maneuvers threaten to destabilize Kano and potentially the broader Northern Nigeria region. He cautioned against using the current unrest as a pretext to declare a state of emergency in Kano.
Rafsanjani criticized the recent court ruling that facilitated the return of Emir Aminu Bayero, questioning the legitimacy of the court order since it was issued by a judge who is currently out of the country. He argued that the reliance on this controversial court order by security operatives to justify their actions in Kano is deeply troubling and only serves to escalate tensions.
He pointed out that the Kano State Government possesses the constitutional authority to appoint and confirm traditional leaders, including the Emir. Attempts to undermine this authority and push the state into chaos are unacceptable. CISLAC stressed that respecting the autonomy of the Kano State Government in managing its traditional institutions is crucial to avoid further conflict.
Rafsanjani urged all relevant authorities to prioritize dialogue and adhere to lawful processes in resolving the crisis. He highlighted that the stability of Kano is vital for the progress of Northern Nigeria and warned that the ongoing turmoil could undo significant developmental strides made in the region.
In summary, CISLAC’s statement underscores the importance of maintaining peace and stability in Kano by respecting constitutional processes and avoiding actions that could lead to anarchy, urging the federal government to act with caution and prioritize dialogue.
