Man Fatally Shot In Face With Police Tear Gas Canister

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, May 22, has sparked outrage and demands for justice.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to Leadership Newspaper, Anele was returning home from work when he was involved in a minor accident with a motorcyclist and his passenger. After ensuring the well-being of the accident victims, Anele proceeded on his way.

However, trouble arose when police officers arrived at the scene and insisted that Anele accompany them to the station, despite the absence of the motorcyclist and his passenger. The confrontation escalated, leading to the fatal shooting of Anele in the face at close range with a tear gas canister.

Images and videos circulating online depicted Anele bleeding from his face with a metallic object embedded in it.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, described the incident as an “accidental discharge.” She confirmed that the tragic event took place in the Byazhin community in Kubwa, Abuja, around 9:45 pm on Wednesday.

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Benneth Igweh, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Anele’s death.

Despite being rushed to Kubwa General Hospital and later referred to the National Hospital, Anele succumbed to his injuries around 8 am on Thursday.

The incident has raised concerns about police conduct and accountability, prompting calls for transparency and justice for Anele and his family.

The exam, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), will run from April 16 to April 22 in multiple daily sessions.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged examination officials to remain highly committed and professional, noting that the success of the exercise depends largely on their dedication.

He gave the charge during a virtual final briefing for technical officers ahead of the examination, where he also praised staff, ad hoc personnel, service providers, and technical advisers for their roles in the successful conduct of the mock exam.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.

He also disclosed that biometric verification and real-time monitoring systems have been deployed to protect the integrity of the exercise.

Candidates whose biometrics cannot be verified, he added, will be rescheduled to write the exam at approved centres.

Meanwhile, a NAN correspondent monitoring proceedings at Aduvie International School, Jahi, reported that the first session scheduled for 8:30 a.m. began slightly behind schedule at about 8:40 a.m.
