Speculations abound that Atiku, who contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, is contemplating stepping aside for Peter Obi in the upcoming 2027 polls.
Atiku himself confirmed this move, stating in an interview with BBC Hausa that he is willing to yield to Peter Obi if the PDP decides to zone the presidential candidacy to the South East.
In response, the APC remains undeterred, with Deputy National Organizing Secretary Nze Chidi Duru expressing the party’s stance in an interview with Vanguard. Duru emphasized the importance of a robust opposition in advancing democracy, asserting that the APC and Nigeria would benefit from such dissenting voices.
“We will continue to hope that opposition parties will rise to the occasion to give a formidable and constructive engagement to our political party. It is theirs to provide such opposition, and it is for us in the APC to continue to take the lead,” Duru remarked.
While extending goodwill to Atiku and Peter Obi in their planned merger, Duru reiterated the APC’s commitment to addressing the needs of Nigerians and maintaining its position as the leading political force in the country.
As political maneuvers unfold and alliances take shape, Nigeria braces itself for potential shifts in power dynamics, underscoring the ever-evolving nature of its democratic landscape.
