Food Prices: FG Blames Middlemen, Defends Tinubu Amid Rising Costs.
The Federal Government has blamed commodity middlemen and hoarders for worsening food scarcity and driving up prices, accusing them of purchasing produce directly from farmers, stockpiling the items in sealed warehouses and later selling them at excessively high rates.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the allegation on Monday during a media briefing on the state of the nation. He said the practice was disrupting the distribution of available food supplies and making it harder for traders and consumers to access essential commodities.
Idris recalled incidents in Kano State where security operatives reportedly had to force open warehouses after some traders allegedly hoarded food items.
“We had a situation in this country where some hoarders, you know, taking advantage of the situation, were buying off these commodities, putting them in warehouses, and even sealing the warehouses. In some instances, in Kano, I recall, that security agencies had to go there and force some of these warehouses open,” the minister said.
He questioned the motives of those allegedly taking advantage of food shortages to make excessive profits, warning that such practices could undermine government efforts to improve food availability and affordability.
Idris also stressed the need for Nigerians to support policies aimed at addressing the country’s food challenges. He argued that consumers should not be prevented from accessing available food supplies because middlemen were restricting the movement of commodities through the distribution chain.
The minister said the Tinubu administration had anticipated some of these challenges. He noted that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security had been releasing food reserves, storing commodities in smaller silos and making them available when needed.
No Return To Fuel Subsidy
On the rising cost of petrol, Idris maintained that Nigeria was not the only country experiencing increases in fuel prices, attributing the trend partly to developments in the Middle East and their effects on international energy markets.
“If you follow what is happening in the Middle East now, you will have noticed that price of fuel has not gone up only in Nigeria. It has gone up in so many other places,” he said.
The minister also dismissed claims that the Federal Government had reinstated fuel subsidies. He explained that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) had instead decided to reduce its profit margin to ease the burden of rising petrol prices on consumers.
“What the NNPC has done is they have looked at it and said, okay, we are making this much profit. Why can’t we forego some of the profit that we are making so that Nigerians will have, you know, some form of cushion?” Idris stated.
He described the decision as part of the company’s responsibility to ensure energy security, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was responding to the economic pressures facing Nigerians.
“President Bola Tinubu is a listening president. He cannot just sit and see that countrymen are facing the pressure that they have not seen coming and they will not do anything about it,” he added.
FG Defends Economic Performance
The minister also defended the Federal Government’s economic policies, accusing critics of selectively interpreting reports from international institutions, including the World Bank, depending on whether the findings supported their positions.
Idris argued that some critics welcomed international statistics when they appeared favourable to their arguments but questioned their relevance when the figures suggested a different outcome.
“Whenever World Bank reports say something that is very favourable, you know, they will say, my statistics will go chop. But when there seems to be something that indicates otherwise, then we hold on those statistics as if they actually matter,” he said.
Providing figures to support his position, Idris stated that Nigeria’s economy grew by 4.2 per cent in the first half of 2026, compared with 3.9 per cent during the corresponding period in 2025 and 3.5 per cent in 2024.

Obasanjo Wanted Me To Go, I Refused – Oby Ezekwesili Opens Up On Clash With Former President.
Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has recounted how former President Olusegun Obasanjo insisted that she travel to Norway to represent him at a major international event despite her initial refusal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ezekwesili disclosed this during an interview with Founders Connect, explaining that Obasanjo had been scheduled to deliver a keynote address at a global meeting of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in Norway but was later unable to attend.
According to the former minister, Obasanjo contacted her on the eve of his planned trip and informed her that she would have to travel in his place.
She said she strongly opposed the decision because she was already occupied with several government responsibilities, particularly reforms she was determined to complete before the administration’s tenure ended.
Ezekwesili explained that Obasanjo often reassigned her to different roles because of her efficiency, a practice she said sometimes disrupted her plans and made it difficult to concentrate on ongoing projects.
Recalling the incident, she said she had carefully organised her schedule and calculated the time required to complete her reform work. She was therefore unhappy that the proposed trip would take her away for two or three days.
The former minister said she openly protested the directive and insisted that she would not travel. However, Obasanjo reportedly contacted her husband and asked him to persuade her to accept the assignment.
“I said I wasn’t going. It forced him to have to call my husband and say, ‘Beg me, beg her for me. She has to go to Norway,’” Ezekwesili recalled.
She said she returned home frustrated, arguing that the government had only a few months left in office and that she needed to focus on completing as much of her reform agenda as possible.
Ezekwesili added that, while serving in the education sector, she had deliberately limited her official travels, directing her minister of state to attend engagements that required her presence.
She was therefore disappointed when Obasanjo’s instruction threatened to disrupt the plan she had put in place.
The former minister said she initially expected her husband to support her refusal, but he instead encouraged her to make the trip.
According to her, her husband believed the assignment would provide an opportunity for her to step away from her demanding schedule and get some fresh air.
She eventually agreed to travel, and the event turned out to be a notable experience. Ezekwesili revealed that the person scheduled to deliver the next keynote address was the then president of the World Bank.
Her account highlights the tension between her commitment to completing government reforms and Obasanjo’s insistence that she represent him at the international gathering.

I Was Not Arrested And Released After One Hour – Rochas Okorocha.
Former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has denied reports that he was arrested by the Nigerian Police and released on bail after an hour of interrogation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has denied reports that he was arrested by the Nigerian Police and released on bail after an hour of interrogation.
Reports had indicated that police spokesperson Aniete Iniedu told Channels Television that Okorocha was arrested in Abuja on Monday night and granted bail after being questioned for about an hour.
According to the reports, the alleged arrest was linked to accusations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.
However, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, the former governor dismissed the claims as false.
Okorocha also accused the Imo State Government of engaging in a campaign of political persecution against him.
In the statement titled “We’ve Been Vindicated. Falsehood Has Never Prevailed Over Truth. Truth Is Sacred,” he insisted that he had not been arrested, granted bail or made any statement to the police. He also challenged those making the allegations to provide evidence.
“Again, their latest story that Owelle Okorocha was arrested and released after one hour is also not true. And we equally stand to be contradicted,” the statement read.
The former governor further alleged that those spreading the reports had relied on a court order dated September 9, 2026, before announcing on Monday, October 12, that he had been arrested.
Okorocha, who governed Imo State from 2011 to 2019, maintained that he served the state to the best of his ability and would continue to defend his record in office.
He also argued that the court order allegedly used to support the claims was no longer valid, insisting that the same court had set it aside on September 14, 2026.
“The court order they had used to deceive the general public was dated September 9, 2026. The same court order was vacated by the same court on September 14, 2026,” he said.
Questioning the basis for relying on the order in October, Okorocha asked whether a directive issued on September 9 and vacated five days later could still be considered valid.
He maintained that the answer was no and reiterated his denial of the reported arrest.

BREAKING: Sowore Drags DSS DG, AGF, Others To Court, Demands ₦5 Billion Damages.
Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has filed a ₦5 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Department of State Services (DSS) over an alleged assault and forcible removal from the Federal High Court in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2480/2026, was filed on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, against the DSS, its Director-General, Tosin Ajayi, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and a deputy director of the security agency, Benjamin Bulus.
Sowore alleged that DSS operatives assaulted him and forcibly removed him from the court premises on June 22, 2026, despite a subsisting court order directing that he be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
He said the incident occurred after Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his remand pending the hearing and determination of his application seeking a stay of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.
According to Sowore, armed DSS operatives, including hooded male and female officers, stormed the fourth floor of the court building while he was waiting for correctional officers to arrive and execute the remand order.
He claimed that the operatives physically assaulted him, forcibly removed him from the area and took him against his will to the basement of the court complex through elevators reserved for Federal High Court judges. He said the incident left him with physical injuries.
The activist maintained that the remand order did not authorise the security operatives to assault him, remove him forcibly or subject him to degrading treatment within the court premises.
Through the suit, Sowore is asking the court to determine whether the DSS operatives acted beyond the scope of the judicial order and whether their alleged conduct violated his fundamental rights.
He is seeking ₦5 billion in aggravated damages over the alleged violation of his constitutional rights to dignity and personal liberty.
A key aspect of the case is video footage reportedly recorded during the incident using Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
According to the court documents, Sowore intends to rely on the footage as evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the conduct of the security operatives involved.
