Arrests Over Enugu Ward Meeting Violence

In a separate development, detectives from the Zone 13 Command in Ukpo, Anambra State, arrested several high-profile figures over a violent attack during an NDC ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. Those detained include former House of Representatives member Uchenna Igwesi (USA Igwesi), prominent traditional ruler Igwe Obiora Igwesi, and eight others.

The arrests were ordered by the Inspector-General of Police on Tuesday, September 22, following a petition dated September 15, 2026, filed by Chief G. Tagbo Ike, SAN, on behalf of the NDC Obuoffia Ward.

Details of the Obuoffia Attack

According to the petition submitted to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the incident occurred on September 12, 2026, as party members gathered for a permitted ward meeting at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuoffia—the home ward of the party’s governorship candidate, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa.

The petition alleges that a convoy drove past the venue and Uchenna Igwesi yelled threats, including statements like “We will spill blood, and nothing will happen” and “We will kill Donald Onovo”. Moments later, staccato gunshots rang out, leaving eight individuals with gunshot injuries, alongside others who sustained minor wounds. The identified victims include:

  • Hon. Donald Onovo

  • Hon. Maduka Ngene (Ward Chairman)

  • Mr. Victor Onovo

  • Madam Ogbodo Gloria

  • Mr. Maduabuchi Ugwu

  • Mr. Nelson Nnaemeka

  • Mr. Chinonso Nwagbara

  • Mr. Obinna Daniel Owo

The petition emphasizes the necessity of bringing the suspects to court to curb lawlessness ahead of the 2027 general elections, further alleging that the 17 Local Government Areas of Enugu State have recently faced coordinated armed attacks aimed at silencing the political opposition.
