Appearing on the Afropolitan Podcast, the artist—who has previously spoken publicly about living with sickle cell disease—revealed that the medical emergency struck mid-flight during a journey with a scheduled stopover in Ethiopia.

A Flight That Almost Got Diverted

• Sudden Onset: The singer initially felt severe stomach cramps and pain while on the plane, which he first blamed on a meal he consumed at the airport before departure.

• Escalating Emergency: As the pain intensified and visits to the aircraft restroom offered no relief, his condition rapidly deteriorated, becoming so critical that the crew nearly had to divert and land the plane early.

• Wheelchair Assistance: Fortunately, the aircraft was already nearing Ethiopia; upon landing, the severity of his condition meant he could not walk and had to be placed in a wheelchair for transport straight to the hospital.

Medical Diagnosis and the Danger of Air Travel

Doctors confirmed that he was undergoing a sickle cell crisis, noting a localized reaction primarily centered in his stomach. Medical professionals informed the singer that dehydration on flights drastically drops oxygen levels—warned that he failed to drink enough water that day.

Reflecting on his frequent air travel, Adekunle Gold emphasized the hidden physical risks for anyone living with the condition:

“I feel like I live on the plane… and if you know anyone living with sickle cell, you will know it is about oxygen, oxygen level and when you are up there, it is crazy.”
