Decades of State Harassment and Illegal Detentions
The senior lawyer details a series of high-profile confrontations with state security apparatuses, beginning during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) primary assignment in Oyo State (1982–1983), when the government withheld his discharge certificate for providing legal representation to University of Ibadan students facing conspiracy charges.

June 1985 NSO Arrest: Arrested by armed National Security Organisation (NSO) operatives at the Lagos State High Court, searched without a warrant, and held for seven weeks at the 15 Awolowo Road detention facility in Ikoyi until the August 1985 military coup.

April 1990 Abduction: Abducted from his Lagos residence at 2:00 AM by SSS operatives, driven toward the Lagos-Epe expressway, and abandoned in a remote bush path.

October 1991 Travel Bar: Prevented by the SSS from traveling to Harare, Zimbabwe, to deliver a paper at an international human rights conference, with his passport seized for six months.

May 1992 Political Arrest: Arrested alongside pro-democracy activists Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti and Baba Omojola, detained at the Bar Beach Police Station, and subsequently flown to Abuja under armed guard.
Demands Before the Regional Court
Falana is asking the ECOWAS Court to declare his past arrests, detentions, passport seizures, and state-sponsored harassment unlawful and unconstitutional under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
In addition to formal declarations of breach regarding his rights to dignity, fair hearing, personal liberty, and movement, the human rights titan is seeking US$10 million in compensatory damages from the Federal Government.

Reacting to the verdict, Adeyanju emphasized that under Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), INEC is legally bound to enforce decisions made by the Supreme Court without delay.
To give full effect to the judgment, Adeyanju urged the electoral body to immediately update its official portal by removing the names of candidates from political parties impacted by the ruling. He maintained that the commission must execute all necessary administrative steps promptly to ensure its official records accurately reflect the Supreme Court’s directives.

The directive was made public by the State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, while briefing journalists in Umuahia following the state’s monthly Security Council meeting chaired by the governor. Flanked by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (rtd.), the Commissioner noted that Governor Otti explicitly instructed security agencies to ensure a level playing field and grant express approval to any political party requesting venues for campaigns.
