In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, stated that a comprehensive audit of the state’s financial position revealed “humongous net liabilities” rather than the net assets Obi previously claimed. According to Mefor, these foreign loans—obtained from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA)—were omitted from Obi’s official handover notes.
The commissioner noted that successive administrations, including Governor Charles Soludo’s, have had their monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations deducted to service these obligations.
Addressing Obi’s recent defense, Mefor dismissed attempts to downplay the debt:
“After we provided unassailable evidence in response to his challenge, he and his supporters have been hair-splitting… inventing all manner of new accounting theories to explain that one can conceal liabilities simply because the asset side is higher. That’s voodoo accounting!”
Mefor urged the former governor to take responsibility for initiating the challenge, stating that loan dates and figures can be independently verified with the Debt Management Office (DMO) in Abuja. He emphasized that signing the loan agreements was enough to bind the state to the debt, regardless of when funds were drawn down.
The state government concluded that since the facts directly contradict Obi’s claims regarding his financial legacy, taking the path of honor and apologizing to the people of Anambra State is his only credible recourse.
