The Chief Imam of Ilaro, Ogun State, Tajudeen Adewunmi, has debunked widespread speculations suggesting that the ₦25 million left with him by the late Nollywood icon Taiwo Hassan, widely known as Ogogo, prior to his passing was designated for a mosque project. Speaking during an interview with BBC Yoruba, Adewunmi explained that these rumors prompted him to address the matter directly with the late actor’s family. Detailing the background of the transaction, Adewunmi highlighted his close relationship and neighborhood proximity to the late actor. According to the cleric, Ogogo transferred the funds while anticipating a potential medical trip to India, instructing him to use the money to rebuild the ancestral home. To ensure absolute accountability, Adewunmi immediately recorded the transaction with his son Adam, utilized a logbook provided and signed by Ogogo, and informed the late actor’s brother, Ayinde, and daughter, Rasheedat, about the funds.
Addressing the resolution of the controversy during the seventh-day post-funeral prayers, Adewunmi met with the family at 6 p.m. to lay the rumors to rest. After presenting the situation and expressing his readiness to return the money, a consensus was reached with Ogogo’s two wives and children. Consequently, Adewunmi met Ayinde at the bank and successfully transferred the complete sum to the account of the late actor’s elder brother, Rilwan, leaving the family equipped to decide on the execution of the grandfather’s house project.
