Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has defended his decision to back President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election as a calculated political move, stating that he has no regrets about the shift.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

During an appearance on Arise News, Ortom explained that although he supported Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential race, he adopted a “if you can’t beat them, you join them” mindset after Tinubu’s victory, publicly aligning himself with the president around the time his former G5 ally, Nyesom Wike, was appointed FCT Minister.

Shifting focus to state politics, Ortom launched scathing criticisms against Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration ahead of the 2027 Benue governorship race:

  • Governance and Rule of Law: He accused the current administration of disregarding the rule of law, targeting political opponents, and failing to hold a single bipartisan stakeholders’ meeting since taking office.

  • Local Government: He alleged that local government autonomy is still not being implemented in Benue State.

  • Asset Dispute: Ortom claimed that Governor Alia has refused to return 23 government vehicles—legitimately allocated to him and other former officials at the end of their tenure—despite a valid court judgment ordering their return.

The Benue State Government has stated that it received no prior notification regarding Tuesday’s visit by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Responding to the incident through Kula Tersoo, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, the state administration maintained it was completely unaware of the trip, noting that advanced notice would have enabled a swifter official response. Tersoo also raised concerns regarding Obi’s security detail, emphasizing that as a former governor and national presidential candidate, his movements should involve coordination between federal security agencies and host-state authorities.

Furthermore, the governor’s aide firmly dismissed allegations linking the state government to the youths who blocked the convoy, asserting that the administration does not employ thugs and views Obi as no political threat to Governor Alia. Tersoo concluded by reiterating the administration’s absolute lack of prior knowledge regarding the visit, stating that they only became aware of the situation through media inquiries.
