Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has weighed in on the increasing trend of Nollywood producers utilizing YouTube as a primary streaming platform, arguing it is a temporary and reactive measure driven by Nigeria’s current economic climate. In an interview on the Nidacity Podcast with former Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun, Afolayan contended that filmmakers are “rushing to YouTube because of the dollar exchange rate,” rather than strategic long-term planning.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

While acknowledging YouTube as an accessible and flexible “starting point” for beginners or those lacking the leverage to access major platforms like Netflix or Prime Video, Afolayan was critical of viewing it as a legitimate long-term alternative to premium streaming services. He stated clearly, “YouTube can never give you what Netflix and Prime would give you.”

Afolayan provided a stark economic breakdown of the trend, suggesting that profitability on YouTube is currently inflated by the weak naira. He explained that with the exchange rate at approximately ₦1,400 to $1, securing 1 million views translates to a significant income of about $10,000. However, he predicted a mass exodus from the platform if the currency stabilizes. “If the dollar falls to ₦200, everyone will run away from YouTube,” Afolayan stated.

Concluding his remarks, the filmmaker emphasized that while he understands the current economic necessity for many producers, he ultimately hopes for a stronger naira, saying, “I pray the dollar-to-naira exchange rate comes down.”
