Why Troops Rescue Hostages Without Killing Terrorists — Defence Minister
Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.) has clarified that the recovery of kidnapped victims without capturing or eliminating their captors typically results from intense military pressure compelling terrorists to abandon their captives and escape. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Musa addressed inquiries regarding recent operations where hostages were freed without reported criminal casualties.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Challenging the notion that armed terrorists will invariably stay and engage advancing troops, Musa explained that many choose to flee upon realizing security forces have closed in or when military assets, such as drones, approach their positions. Noting that these criminals fundamentally wish to avoid dying despite carrying weapons, he stated that even the presence of a drone often causes them to scatter and abandon everyone. This dynamic allows troops to successfully rescue hostages without initiating a firefight that could risk the captives’ lives.
Beyond direct confrontations, Musa detailed alternative tactics focused on severing the logistical lifelines that sustain terrorist camps. Instead of relying exclusively on armed conflict, security forces locate criminal hideouts and cut off essential supplies like food, water, and fuel. By effectively blocking these avenues and targeting external support systems, the military starves the operations out.
Furthermore, the Defence Minister highlighted ongoing initiatives to track financial transactions tied to criminal activities and ransom payments to uncover broader networks. He commended the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for stepping up efforts to identify and trace suspicious funds back to their sources.

Ajayi emphasized the complexity of the operation, noting that the presence of a two-and-a-half-year-old child among the hostages required meticulous planning to ensure the captives’ safety. He also addressed misinformation circulating online during the rescue, clarifying that certain viral videos purporting to show the torture of children were unrelated deepfakes from another country.
Furthermore, the DSS Director-General linked the kidnapping network to an international terrorist organization connected to Al-Qaeda. He revealed that the group’s leaders were apprehended last year and have since been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, along with three collaborators. Ajayi stated that these individuals were also found complicit in the Abuja-Kaduna train attack and were plotting further large-scale abductions before their arrest.
