During a recent appearance on the Good News Naija Podcast, Kuti shared his perspectives on the founding of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the tenure of its pioneering chairman, Nuhu Ribadu. He noted that the agency was originally established to crack down on public corruption, recounting how even members of the ruling elite’s own families—including Obasanjo’s daughter—faced arrests during the height of the commission’s early operations.
The musician also touched upon the abrupt end of Ribadu’s tenure at the anti-graft agency, recalling that the former chairman faced intense pressure and threats to his safety before eventually leaving the post. Kuti then drew a parallel to the present political landscape, highlighting that Ribadu currently serves in a key security capacity under President Bola Tinubu as the National Security Adviser.
According to Kuti, this fluid movement of key actors across successive administrations highlights a broader political cycle that can disillusion citizens. He pointed out that political elites who frequently appear adversarial in the public eye are often seen sharing close ties at private social gatherings, weddings, and public events.
The musician argued that these recurring patterns create a sense of disconnect for the younger generation.
