Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has clarified that Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution does not legally mandate political tickets or public appointments to be balanced by religion. Addressing comments made by opposition figure Rabiu Kwankwaso regarding political inclusion, Sule dismissed them as standard opposition rhetoric. He pointed out that same-faith tickets have historically succeeded in Nigeria, referencing the 1993 presidential election and the current administration of President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, adding, “I pray that one day Nigeria will have a Christian-Christian ticket, and it will win.”

While Sule noted that his own choice of a Christian deputy governor, Emmanuel Akabe, was driven by competence and state dynamics—pointing out that states like Enugu and Bayelsa also feature same-faith leadership—he stressed that political leaders should prioritize competence and local realities over religious considerations when selecting candidates.
