West African leaders have finalized a landmark agreement to construct a $27 billion gas pipeline connecting Nigeria and Morocco. The 6,000-kilometer pipeline is set to become one of Africa’s largest energy infrastructure projects. It will transport natural gas from Nigeria through 13 nations along Africa’s Atlantic coast before reaching Morocco, where it will integrate with the existing Maghreb-Europe Gas Pipeline.

ECOWAS Chairman and Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio confirmed the endorsement, emphasizing the bloc’s commitment to enhancing regional energy infrastructure and economic integration.

In a joint statement, Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) outlined the project’s goals:

• Linking West African gas resources to international markets.

• Creating a new economic corridor connecting West Africa, the Sahel, and Europe.

• Improving energy security, promoting industrial development, and expanding access to cleaner energy for participating countries.

Project leaders announced a split-headquarters structure, with a special project company based in Casablanca, Morocco, and a separate governing authority overseeing implementation located in Abuja, Nigeria.

Investors will be invited to participate once these governing bodies are established and a Final Investment Decision is reached. Sources indicate that construction is slated to begin in 2028, with the first gas deliveries expected by 2031.
