.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigerian Senate has officially dismissed Governor Seyi Makinde’s appeal for United Nations (UN) involvement in investigating the kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. The upper chamber maintained that this situation is a domestic security issue that must be resolved internally.

  • Opposition to Internationalization: Lawmakers warned that seeking international intervention could diminish the work currently being done by the Nigerian federal government and security forces to combat terrorism and kidnapping.

  • Senate Resolution: During Tuesday’s plenary, the Senate resolved that the governor should stop escalating domestic security matters to the international community.

  • Political Accusations: This decision was prompted by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who argued that Governor Makinde is politicizing national security and compromising Nigeria’s sovereignty by calling for a UN-led investigation.

  • Governor’s Original Request: Governor Makinde had requested an investigation by the UN and international human rights groups during a broadcast on Monday, following the rescue of the victims.

  • Commendation of Security Forces: The Senate praised President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s security agencies for securing the release of the victims, who had been held by armed terrorists for over 50 days following their abduction on May 15, 2026.

  • Strategic Recommendations: The Senate advised the federal government to continue strengthening military and intelligence operations against criminal groups by improving equipment, surveillance technology, logistics, and personnel welfare.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially denied allegations that it provided access codes to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) faction headed by Nafiu Bala Gombe. In his statement, Gombe emphasized that this move was a step toward protecting the interests of the party’s legacy members against “anti-democratic tendencies,” while reiterating the party’s commitment to fielding competent candidates.

However, Mallam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, has clarified the situation regarding which faction holds the authorization to nominate candidates. Haruna stated unequivocally that the portal access code was issued exclusively to the leadership faction led by Senator David Mark.

Haruna explained that the commission’s records clearly reflect this decision, noting that the Senator Mark faction had already utilized the code to submit the details of over 400 candidates—including those for the presidency—well before a recent Court of Appeal ruling nullified the group’s state congresses. “We never issued any access code to the Nafiu Gombe faction,” Haruna affirmed.
