Leadership: Major General Chinedu Nnebeife

The operation was orchestrated by Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2 Division, Nigerian Army, based in Ibadan.

  • Nnebeife, who assumed command of the 2 Division on August 19, 2025, has made troop welfare and operational effectiveness key priorities during his tenure.

  • Beyond his GOC role, he serves as the Force Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMA Sector 3, a formation dedicated to combating terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry.

  • Prior to this mission, Nnebeife successfully supervised a rescue operation in Kwara State’s Babasango Forest that secured the freedom of two kidnap victims.

A Multilateral Security Effort

The rescue was a highly coordinated effort that utilized a diverse array of tactical and intelligence assets to track the abductors and dismantle their logistics network.

  • Participating military and government agencies included the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the National Counter Terrorism Centre, the Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

  • The operation also integrated personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun Corps, and local hunters and vigilantes who provided essential knowledge of the terrain.

  • Tactical units deployed for the mission included the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service, Defence Headquarters Special Operations Forces, Nigerian Army Special Operations Forces—including snipers—the Police Intelligence Response Team, and the DSS Special Tactical and Anti-Terrorism Team.

  • The Nigerian Air Force provided critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support to monitor terrorist hideouts, while ground forces applied sustained pressure that ultimately forced the unconditional release of the captives.
