Many Nigerians who left with hopes for better opportunities are currently struggling, despite holding university degrees and earning in foreign currencies.

Due to labour market realities, many graduates abroad are working in roles outside their fields of study, such as in warehouses or care facilities.

Although migrants may earn thousands of pounds monthly, a significant portion of their income is consumed by essential costs like rent, bills, food, and transportation.

Because their earnings are often insufficient to cover these living expenses, many are forced to work multiple jobs just to survive.

Bwala noted that the pressure of living abroad often leaves migrants with little disposable income and no safety net, whereas those earning lower incomes in Nigeria can often rely on support from friends and family.

Bwala described this experience for many as “modern-day slavery,” arguing that those in Nigeria who believe they are suffering are often better off than those who left five years ago.
