Cooking Gas Nightmare: Prices Stay Sky-High Despite Government Promises!.

Published

on

Two weeks after the Federal Government’s emergency intervention, marketers report that cooking gas prices remain persistently high despite improved product supply. While an Abuja stakeholders’ meeting on June 22, convened by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo, successfully calmed market panic and boosted daily supply from approximately 4,262 metric tonnes in May to over 5,000 metric tonnes in June, retail prices have failed to see a significant reduction. Across the country, consumers continue to pay between ₦1,300 and ₦1,650 per kilogramme, with prices remaining elevated due to structural issues including high foreign exchange costs, expensive transportation, and insufficient domestic production. Edu Inyang, National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, characterized the meeting as a successful initial step that restored supply chain confidence, yet warned that affordability remains a major concern as households continue to shift toward cheaper alternatives like firewood and charcoal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Despite government efforts to stabilize the LPG market, Nigerian households are yet to experience meaningful relief from the high cost of cooking gas. Although supply sufficiency improved from 11 days to 22 days following a June emergency meeting, Edu Inyang of the national marketers’ association noted that the intervention prioritized product availability over price reductions. Retail rates, which had spiked as high as ₦2,500 per kilogramme in some areas during June, have stopped escalating rapidly but remain at levels that many families find unaffordable. Marketers attribute these stubborn prices to a combination of rising import costs, distribution bottlenecks, and global pricing factors that were not fully resolved by the Abuja stakeholders’ meeting.

Option 3: Concise Summary Government intervention in the cooking gas market has successfully eased supply shortages and halted rapid price spikes, but retail costs remain prohibitively high for millions of Nigerians. While marketers confirm that product scarcity has reduced and filling plants now have better access to supplies, factors such as high transportation expenses and foreign exchange volatility continue to drive retail prices between ₦1,300 and ₦1,650 per kilogramme. Industry leaders emphasize that while the recent stakeholder engagement was a vital move to prevent deeper supply disruptions, a sustained reduction in prices will require addressing structural challenges in domestic production and logistics.

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communications, has suggested that some Nigerians staying in the country may be in a better financial situation than those who have relocated abroad. Speaking on The Morayo Show, Bwala highlighted the difficulties faced by migrants in countries like the United Kingdom:....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

    • Many Nigerians who left with hopes for better opportunities are currently struggling, despite holding university degrees and earning in foreign currencies.

    • Due to labour market realities, many graduates abroad are working in roles outside their fields of study, such as in warehouses or care facilities.

    • Although migrants may earn thousands of pounds monthly, a significant portion of their income is consumed by essential costs like rent, bills, food, and transportation.

    • Because their earnings are often insufficient to cover these living expenses, many are forced to work multiple jobs just to survive.

    • Bwala noted that the pressure of living abroad often leaves migrants with little disposable income and no safety net, whereas those earning lower incomes in Nigeria can often rely on support from friends and family.

    • Bwala described this experience for many as “modern-day slavery,” arguing that those in Nigeria who believe they are suffering are often better off than those who left five years ago.
