Bringing Them Home: FG Unveils Emergency Plan To Airlift Trapped Nigerians Out Of South Africa.
The Federal Government is moving forward with its efforts to bring Nigerians home from South Africa, confirming that an additional evacuation flight is expected to arrive this Tuesday. This measure comes as a proactive step to ensure the safety of citizens amid rising concerns regarding potential xenophobic protests scheduled to begin on June 30.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the details of the operation on Monday. An Air Peace flight was scheduled to depart Nigeria at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, arriving in South Africa by 9:00 p.m. local time. The return flight is set to leave South Africa at midnight, with an expected arrival at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on Tuesday morning.
For those choosing to stay in South Africa, Ebienfa provided important safety guidance: “To be calm and security conscious. Avoid routes and areas dominated by protesters. Always be in contact with the Nigerian High Commission for necessary updates.”
This ongoing evacuation is part of a voluntary program approved by President Bola Tinubu earlier this month. Following the screening of over 500 interested individuals, the government authorized five dedicated Air Peace flights to facilitate their return. To date, 328 Nigerians have already been safely repatriated across two previous operations: 262 citizens arrived on June 11, followed by another 66 on June 25. The Ministry continues to work closely with Air Peace and relevant authorities to ensure the safety of all Nigerians throughout this process.

Prioritizing Current Crises: Dickson suggested that the government should focus its immediate efforts on combating terrorism and insecurity, arguing that the establishment of a state police force should be deferred to the next administration.
-
Decentralization Concerns: While backing the move to decentralize policing, Dickson advocated for broader structural changes, specifically recommending the decentralization of mineral rights to facilitate resource control.
-
Proposed Phased Approach: Rather than an immediate shift to state police, he argued that policing should first be decentralized to the zonal level.
-
Proposed Constitutional Oversight: He outlined a preference for amending the constitution to empower governors to appoint police commissioners, subject to confirmation by the Police Service Commission and oversight by the state Houses of Assembly.
Additionally, the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed skepticism regarding the timing of the initiative. Obi specifically questioned the appropriateness of amending the constitution to grant such significant powers to governors shortly before an upcoming election.

Democratic Crisis: Atiku Exposes Secret Moves To Block ADC From 2027 Presidential Race.

Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, in Abuja on Monday, Atiku characterized these alleged efforts as a strategic assault on the opposition by “anti-democratic elements” within the governing party. Atiku further contended that the ruling establishment is leveraging political and legal maneuvers to destabilize the opposition and compromising neutral institutions for partisan gain. Emphasizing that the integrity of the electoral process is vital to the nation, he stated that administrative actions cannot stifle the public’s desire for political change or undermine democracy.
Consequently, he has called upon the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security services, civil society groups, and the international community to safeguard the electoral process against such interference. Atiku concluded by urging Nigerians to remain vigilant, asserting that active citizen engagement is essential for the survival of the nation’s democracy.
